Maybe it’s the dreary white fog I have seen outside my window for the past couple of days that make my vacation photos of Mexico look oh so colourful. Was it really that bright? That beautiful?
Last spring I thought I would be smart and jump on a deal for a flight to Cozumel and then take the ferry over to Playa del Carmen, my destination. I had heard things about Cozumel, such as it being a boring place to visit unless diving was on the agenda (it’s apparently the place to go for diving). Originally I thought I would stay over a night before making my way to Playa, but the search for a boutique hotel turned up mostly all-inclusive resorts when I checked the “near beach” box, so in the end I decided to just pass through.
We landed in Cozumel, took a cab to the ferry docks and had just missed a ferry. With a few hours to wait until the next one, we grabbed some lunch right across the street, the window seat providing the perfect vantage point from which to people-watch.
This fancy car stopped in front of us for a red light, but was soon pulled over by the police, who spent a lot of time talking to the driver. I wondered what they talked about for so long!
After lunch we decided to walk around the charming little town while we waited for the ferry. I found Cozumel cute and colourful and if I could find a little boutique hotel near a beach I would definitely consider going back. Cozumel also didn’t feel crowded with people – another plus. As for taking this route to Playa del Carmen again, it really wasn’t practical and took way too long.
Here are some more photos from our walk around Cozumel, near the ferry docks.
