Ever since changing my diet to vegan a few months ago I have had so much fun visiting a number of vegan spots around Toronto, all new to me. I had asked friends for recommendations and visited many of them, some more than once. I hadn’t realized there were SO many vegan restaurants and bakeries so close to home!
Of course I haven’t included all of them… I seem to notice a new vegan establishment (at least new to me) every week. But this is a start. If you are new or curious about eating vegan, are visiting Toronto and want a healthy vegan meal, or are up for a cool vegan experience (see last recommendation), here are some great spots around town. Click on the links for addresses, operating hours and menu’s.
I ordered the grilled veggie sandwich while my friend ordered one of their bowls and both were delicious. We took a seat at the window at the Kensington location and watched the world go by in one of the coolest Toronto neighbourhoods, while eating this fabulous lunch. I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon!
Fresh is my go-to these days, when I’m downtown and can’t decide where to eat. It’s just so good and so hard to go wrong. They have so much choice in vegan fare, including incredible VEGAN poutine! I also love their mushroom and onion burger, so tasty and full of flavour. I have visited all three locations and they are all consistently good.
Cafe 668 is a vegetarian Asian-fusion restaurant with many vegan choices. I have only visited once, but I plan to go back again soon. The restaurant itself has a romantic feel to it at dinner time, but take-out is also available. I ordered vegetarian wonton soup and a mango salad with tofu that were both really fresh and tasty.
If pub fare is what you’re craving, a visit to Hogtown Vegan will not disappoint. Interestingly, what stood out for me was the excellent service. I had knocked over a glass of pop, sending it spilling all over the floor, and the staff were more than accommodating, even going so far as to say that some restaurants are known to make their floors slightly sticky to avoid them being too slippery for patrons. I felt so bad, but they would have none of it. Plus, cooks in the back could be heard singing – a good sign of a happy workplace and therefore a great vibe while you eat.
After your meal you will want to stop by Bunner’s for a delicious brownie, butter tart or other amazing vegan baked good. The brownies are “out of this world” good. There’s really no excuse to eat a regular, non-vegan brownie ever again!
For something a little different, every month Urban Acorn Catering holds a vegan supper club over a few nights. Think vegan fine dining with strangers in a cool, industrial loft space. The food is top notch, the hostess is lovely and the community feel is awesome. A really special experience. Subscribe to their newsletter to get advance notice on tickets (they sell out fast). Each month is a different theme and they also operate a catering company and marketplace.
